ROSS Leaders Summer 2024 Journey Highlights

Empowering South Sudanese Youth Through Culture, STEAM, and Education Meta Description: Celebrate the ROSS Leaders Summer 2024 highlights, featuring the 3rd Annual OmaROSS, STEAM "Build-A-Hut" projects, and HBCU college tours designed to empower the next generation of leaders.

Empowering Youth, Celebrating Culture

We kicked off this summer with our 3rd Annual OmaROSS! This three day event highlighted our beautiful South Sudanese culture. We engaged our students through arts and crafts, a visit to the Omaha Zoo, high intensity basketball, a career fair, and a Cultural Gala. The Cultural Gala was a night filled with delicious Sudanese food, traditional dances, and a fashion show!

Thank you to our Sponsors, Woodmen Life, RABA Taxi, and Musa Lemonade for your generous support.

STEAM in Action: Build-A-Hut

In collaboration with Aqua-Africa, our students took part in a transformative six-week summer camp known as Build-A-Hut, where they explored STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) subjects through hands-on, real-world applications. By the end of July, our students skillfully applied their learning, mastering solar panels, water systems, and the construction of a model hut.

ROSS Student, Favor was interviewed by KETV 7 Omaha & shared the following: "Being from South Sudan, I always told my mom that when I grow up, I want to go back, help out, and reconnect with family there.

Summer Sports Programs

In addition to Build-A-Hut, we kept our students actively engaged through a range of athletic and group activities. Intramural soccer, volleyball, and basketball allowed students to build healthy competition while strengthening teamwork and bonds.

HBCU College Tour

We proudly hosted our 3rd Annual College Tour, taking high school students in grades 9-12 to Atlanta, Georgia for an immersive HBCU experience.

Our girls visited Spelman College, Georgia State, and Emory University. In addition to the universities, our girls toured the National Human Rights Museum; allowing them to enrich themselves in the history of civil rights in Atlanta and the United States.

Our high school boys explored Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Georgia State. The boys also toured the historic Martin Luther King Memorial and Museum, as well as the National Civil Rights Museum, deepening their understanding of history and social justice. Lastly, they toured the Trap Museum and learned about the history of Atlanta's music scene & entrepreneurship.

Congratulations to our graduates!
